Working Educators’ Application FAQ

Who can apply?

The Urban Teaching Residency Program is now accepting applications from all individuals currently working as educators in an urban school environment, as teachers, aids, or substitute teachers.

Where do I begin my Penn GSE application?

Individuals can apply directly to Penn GSE. You do not have to apply through any other outside agency. The application for the new Urban Teaching Residency Program is currently in development. In the interim, applicants should reach out to Alesha Gayle at aleshad@upenn.edu for further instructions.

What is the application fee?

There is no application fee for students applying to this program. 

What do I need to include in my application?

You will need to include:

  • A statement of purpose. Your statement of purpose should reflect your interest in studying education at the graduate level.
  • Resume/CV
  • Three letters of recommendation

What if I won’t have a final transcript by the application deadline?

If you won’t have your final transcript by the time you apply, submit your current transcript. You will then need to submit your final transcript, generally over by summer, before you can officially register for courses at GSE. 

Are any exams required for the application?

The GRE exams are not required for entry into this program.

What is the application deadline?

This program starts in the fall of each year. We accept applications on a rolling basis, until we are filled.

What are the requirements for fall enrollment?

In order to enroll in the first fall term, applicants must:

  • Hold at least a B.A. and have earned a 3.0 GPA at an accredited university or college,
  • Demonstrate highly qualified status to teach in assigned subject area and grade level by passing any and all required exams (e.g. Praxis, PECT), OR holding a current teaching certification,
  • Obtain and maintain a qualifying teaching placement for the duration of the program.

Where do I begin my Penn GSE application?

In order to apply through the Teach For America program you must have already been accepted into the Teach For America-Greater Philadelphia Region Corps. For more information, please visit www.teachforamerica.org

What is the application fee?

There is no application fee for Teach For America students. 

What do I need to include in my application?

You will need to include:

  • A statement of purpose. Your statement of purpose should reflect your interest in studying education at the graduate level.
  • Three letters of recommendation. One of your letters of recommendation will come directly from Teach For America and confirm your acceptance into that program in the Greater Philadelphia Region. Your second and third letters of recommendation should come from individuals who can speak to your ability to complete graduate-level coursework successfully. 

What if I won’t have a final transcript by the application deadline?

If you won’t have your final transcript by the time you apply, submit your current transcript. You will then need to submit your final transcript, generally over the summer, before you can officially register for courses at GSE.

Teach For America students are not required to take the GRE exam.

There is a rolling application deadline for TFA students. When you are accepted to the Teach For America-Greater Philadelphia Corps, you will be given an application deadline.

What are the requirements for fall enrollment?

In order to enroll in the first fall term, applicants must:

  • Be current Corps Members in the Teach For America program at the beginning of their two year commitment and placed in either the Greater Philadelphia or Southern New Jersey regions,
  • Successfully complete the Teach For America Philadelphia Summer Institute,
  • Hold at least a B.A. and have earned a 3.0 GPA at an accredited university or college,
  • Demonstrate highly qualified status to teach in assigned subject area and grade level by passing any and all required exams (e.g. Praxis, PECT), OR holding a current teaching certification,
  • Obtain and maintain a qualifying teaching placement via Teach For America.
