Penn GSE

Teacher Education Program

At Penn GSE, we believe that teaching is context-specific. Beyond knowing the students in the classroom, it is critical to know the community to develop a rich understanding of the context in which schooling takes place.  With this in mind, our student teachers are placed in community-based KidSites located in the Philadelphia neighborhood where they will be doing their student teaching in the fall. This provides opportunities for student teachers to develop a legitimate entry into the community, getting to know both children and adults who care for them in informal learning settings.

KidSites provide the opportunity for observation hours required for Pennsylvania certification and for the Child Development course, which occurs during the summer fall terms, when student teachers enter the formal school setting. These summer placements are intended to offer the developmental context for teaching, so we place our students with children who are slightly younger than those they will teach.

In turn, the students provide 30 hours of service to the organization, both entering into and giving back to the community.
